Centre for Research in Biomedicine (CRIB)

CRIB is a clustering of academics with the common interest of contemporary Biomedicine as their research theme. The research centre encompasses a variety of research projects from fundamental research programmes (e.g Immunology, haematology, biochemistry, Microbiology, transfusion and transplantation science) to applied biomedicine (especially in molecular diagnostics and replacements for animal testing).

Research activity is supported by a robust and rapidly developing external funding portfolio, and includes funding from the Wellcome trust, BBSRC, the European Commission, NHS executive, National Blood Authority and numerous research charities. A substantial number of PhD students study within the research centre, and these are supported by capability funding received after the 2001 RAE.

CRIB strongly embraces entrepreneurship, and has submitted numerous patents to protect it's Intellectual property. It is also involved in ensuring the safe passage of diagnostic products to the marketplace, by engaging in CE-marking validation. The centre is centrally involved in post-genomics developments, and many academics have embraced these technologies to the full.
